Paul Hogan calls Margot Robbie's Oscars snub a "dull tradition"

Paul Hogan has called out The Academy for their "dull tradition” after Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were snubbed for an Oscar nomination in February.

Despite being the only film directed by a woman to earn more than $1 billion at the box office, Robbie and Gerwig were both snubbed in their respective categories of leading actress and best director during the 96th Academy Awards, which sparked outrage online.

Speaking to Sunrise on Friday, the Crocodile Dundee actor revealed his thoughts on why he thinks both the Aussie actor and Barbie director missed out on a nomination.

“To see them not nominated, that’s a sort of like ... a dull tradition of ‘if it’s not about pain and suffering, it can’t be very good’. It’s not fair,” Hogan said.

He then praised Robbie, saying: “She’s great — not only is she beautiful and smart, she’s a nice kid, too.”

During the interview on Sunrise, Hogan also reflected on the time he hosted the Oscars in 1987, and said that it was good fun.

“It was fabulous because I was probably the first person ever allowed on live television to do the Oscars without presenting a script or having anything written on the auto-cue,” he said.

“They were very nervous but Samuel Goldwyn, who was the producer, said, ‘I’ve seen him on television. He’s Hoges … let’s just let him go and it’ll be fun for all of us’.”

The actor added that while he rarely felt "intimidated", there were a few times in his career where he was starstruck — most notably when he met the Queen, Princess Diana, and Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor.

Hogan's first public appearance was in 1971 at Nine's amateur talent programme New Faces.

He rose to international fame after his role as Mick "Crocodile" Dundee in the 1986 film Crocodile Dundee, which won him the 1987 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and a few other nominations at the BAFTAs.

Images: Seven/ Getty

"They lost it": Margot Robbie's surprise encounter with Barbie fans

Margot Robbie has recalled a sweet story about when she overheard a group of men talking about the Barbie movie, before giving them the surprise of their life.

At a screening of the Barbie movie in Los Angeles, the Aussie actress told the audience of the heartwarming moment she encountered in Scotland, shortly after the film's release last July.

At the SAG-AFTRA screening of the blockbuster movie, Robbie began, “I had this brilliant experience.”

“I was in a pub in the middle of nowhere in Scotland and I listened for about 30 minutes to a group of guys on a bachelor party discussing the Barbie movie, not knowing that I was sitting two or three feet away from them.”

Robbie continued, “It was just truly fascinating. There were people at the table who refused to see the Barbie movie."

“One guy was like, ‘Dude, it is a cultural moment, don’t you want to be a part of culture?’ And the other guy was like, ‘I’ll never see it,’ and by the end he did want to see it. It was a whole thing."

“I wasn’t going to go up to them, but then I did.”

Before leaving the pub, Robbie casually waltzed up to the group of men who “lost it” when they discovered Barbie herself had overheard their conversation.

“At the last minute as I was walking out I went to their table and I went ‘Thank you for seeing the Barbie movie’,” she added.

“It was very funny, they lost it. It took a full minute for them to realise and I was practically out the door and they went ‘Ohhhh’.

“People’s reactions to the movie have been the biggest reward of this entire experience.”

The heartwarming story comes fresh on the heels of Margot being snubbed for a Best Actress nomination at this year's Oscars for the Barbie movie, which caused an uproar on social media.

Margot addressed the snub at the LA screening, saying there's “no way to feel sad when you’re this blessed.”

“Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director,” she added.

“What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is."

“We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that and some, way more than we ever dreamt it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”

Margot Robbie's enormous Barbie salary revealed

Margot Robbie is set to take home her biggest pay cheque yet for her portrayal in the Barbie movie, as the highly-anticipated film hits the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

Robbie, who started her acting career on Neighbours, both starred in and produced the Barbie film, which was directed by Greta Gerwig.

According to reports from Variety, the 32-year-old Aussie actress made an upfront fee of $19 million to portray the Mattel doll, but that figure will make a significant jump after the lucrative sales, bringing Margot's salary to $77 million.

Barbie, which was made on a budget of approximately $220 million, hit the coveted $US1 billion mark at the global box office earlier this month, just two weeks after it hit cinemas.

Robbie was instrumental in the making of the Barbie film, as her production company, LuckyChap, purchased the rights from Mattel in 2018.

She then pitched the film to Warner Bros. and managed to convince Gerwig to both write and direct the blockbuster movie, with Gerwig's partner Noah Baumbach jumping in to help write the screenplay.

Speaking of her commitment to making Barbie happen, Robbie recently said she was “overselling” the project in early meetings with executives to get the project off the ground.

“I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director,” Robbie said in an interview with Collider in July.

She added, “And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg’ – pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years.

“And I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, OK?”

Sam Mac’s emotional tribute to one-month-old daughter

Sam Mac has shared a heartwarming one-month tribute to his baby daughter Margot.

The Sunrise weatherman and his girlfriend, Rebecca James, welcomed Margot Grace McMillan on September 10 following a whirlwind pregnancy.

One month on since her arrival, Sam shared a new photo of baby Margot in the bath with a beautiful tribute, jokingly describing her as a “wrecking ball”.

“Dear Margot, You’re 1 month old today! & my goodness, you came in like a wrecking ball!” Sam’s post read.

“It was always going to take a lot to see me relegated to 2nd biggest diva in the house, but you managed that in your first few hours. When you want something, oh my, do you let us know!

“Your face turns redder than Barnaby Joyce & your scream reaches 2 octaves higher than Jimmy Barnes.”

Sam then described the realities of being parents when babies “shoot out” of their mouths and bottoms, calling Margot a “mini Bellagio fountain”.

He went on to thank Margot for picking him and Rebecca to be her parents, saying they are “just so eternally grateful”.

“You are the most important person in our world. We both can’t stop staring at you. Your tiny fingers, your little ear lobes, the fat rolls on your neck. Every part of you is perfect to us. We even stare at you while you’re sleeping (an activity that would normally have us placed on a watch-list).

“Your Mum is giving you absolutely everything she’s got right now. Sometimes she’s exhausted & in pain, but she doesn’t let you see that. She shows you nothing but love. It’s a privilege to see both of you grow together. You’ll be tough like your Mum one day, I have no doubt.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sam Mac (@sammacinsta)

Sam continued to get more candid with his post, confessing that he is unable to do as much as his partner but that he is trying.

“Think of me as best supporting actor. Calls for new rules surrounding golf carts

There are calls for golf cart drivers to pass a driving test and obtain a licence before getting behind t

Marina Hanna, 29, and husband Robbie Morgan married in a lavish wedding in Sydney’s Doltone House on June 11.

Ten days later, the loved up couple jetsetted to Queensland’s Hamilton Island to celebrate their honeymoon and were travelling in a golf cart when Marina fell after Robbie tried to do a U-turn.

A doctor, off-duty dentist and off-duty firefighter rushed to the scene and desperately performed CPR for 35 minutes on Marina, who unfortunately could not be revived.

Following this awful incident, Pedestrian Council of Australia CEO Harold Scrub has called on golf carts to be banned on the holiday island.

“It was out of control when I was there. I was having to jump out of the way of them,” he said of the holiday island.

“It just seemed like most of the people there had no idea how to use them and it was the first time they'd used them. They seemed to be very flimsy.”

Mr Scrub was saying the island was small enough to walk around and golf carts weren’t necessary.

“They don't need them. It's not a big island. People can walk, or the resorts should lay on some shuttle buses like they do elsewhere,” he continued.

“You have to ask if the carts have a speed governor on them, or if they are speed limited. Who maintains them? What's the insurance situation with them?

“It seemed to be completely unlicensed and anyone could jump on them and drive away. They should be banned.

“Who on earth approved these things? I wouldn't mind if they were for the disabled - but these are just a joy ride cart.

“You should be at least 18 and have passed a driving test before you're allowed to drive these.

“You need to know the rules of the road and how vehicles operate.”

Images: Facebook
